Blue Morning

Well, America has finally answered the question posed by the great Bill Hicks;

"How far does the man's d!@k have to go up your a$$ before you realize you're getting f#@&ed?"

Congratulations, America. Just don't take so long next time. I was getting pretty sore.

I am of two minds about the election results. Part of me, the idealist, knew we would take back atleast either the house or senate, but I predicted a year ago we would take both. For all practical purposes, we already have. Regardless of recounts, holding atleast 49 seats in the Senate is an amazing feat.

The other part of me is more cautious. We made a lot of concessions to win the house. We put up some pretty conservative democrats in the more heated races. We have effectively ousted liberal Republicans in favor of moderate and conservative Democrats, which means very little for progressive change.

America is still conservative. 5 states banned gay marriage with Colorado not only banning it but voting against civil unions. In California, we have yet to hear whether minors will have to have parental notification for abortions, and our oil tax was denied.

We are not ushering in to a new era of big "D" Democracy just yet. Even holding the house and senate, Democrats don't hold the 2/3 majority they would need to override a veto, which means the best they could do is try and block legislation.

Now, more than ever, Democrats need to build a platform, something they lost in Clinton's second term. They need to create an exit strategy for Iraq, and agree to it.

Also, had there not been a Foley or Abramof scandel, and had President Bush had a decent approval rating, would election results be what they are? Democrats got where they are today partly on the backs of Republican scandel, which is terrible.

Regardless, a strong message was sent to South Dakota and Oregon (and hopefully California) regarding a woman's right to choose. Missouri has now allowed stem cell research and 6 states raised minimum wage.

All I'm saying, is don't open the bottle of champagne yet. Democrats need to strategize, and dare I say, work across the aisle for the next two years if they want to see change in 2008.

My 4 cents.

I have to agree 100% that the Dems SERIOUSLY need to come up with a STRONG platform. My biggest complaint with them, by far, has been the lack of a platform. Everyone knows what it means to be a Republican, no one seems to have the vaguest of ideas what it means to be a Democrat, and that's bad.
